The firm was founded in the nineteenth century shortly after a Royal Charter was granted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1880. Frederick William Smith, who practised at 76 Cheapside, was admitted as a Fellow of the Institute in 1881 and in 1896 was joined by Frederick John Riches in a practice called “Fred. W. Smith & Co.” In 1913 the practice was renamed “F. W. Smith, Riches & Co.
